Summer Holiday Rental in Verbier: What the Mountain Offers When the Snow Is Gone

Verbier. For many, the name conjures images of groomed pistes, humming chairlifts, and sun-soaked terrace lunches. That picture is entirely real — but it tells only half the story. When the snow retreats in late spring, a different resort quietly emerges. Calmer, more generous perhaps, and just as extraordinary. If you’re considering a holiday rental in Verbier this summer, here is what the mountain truly has to offer.

Verbier in Summer: A Destination Coming Into Its Own

Long perceived as a winter-only resort, Verbier has steadily built a summer offering that stands firmly on its own merits. The travellers returning between June and September are no longer curious adventurers — they are regulars. Families drawn by space and mountain air, couples seeking quiet, athletes hungry for an exceptional natural playground.

The 4 Vallées ski area, of which Verbier is the centrepiece, offers in summer an extensive network of hiking trails and marked mountain bike routes stretching between Verbier and La Tzoumaz — a terrain few Alpine destinations can rival. The Médran lifts continue to run throughout the season, and the panorama from the Mont-Fort, at over 3,300 metres, is worth every step. A thrilling zip line awaits you up there too.

What to Do in Verbier in Summer

Hiking: the Undisputed Queen of the Season

Verbier sits at one of the finest starting points in the Swiss Alps for those who love to walk. The options are exceptional: the celebrated Sentier des Chamois, for instance, traverses from the heights of La Chaux down to the Cabane de Louvie and its sun-drenched terrace at 2,250 metres — a wild and at times vertiginous crossing through the heart of the Val de Bagnes nature reserve, where ibex and marmots often cross the path. For those drawn to summits, the Pierre Avoi at 2,473 metres delivers a 360° panorama taking in Mont Blanc, the Grand Combin, Verbier itself, and the full sweep of the Rhône Valley — a demanding climb whose views more than reward the effort. Families with younger children will find welcome shade and gentler terrain along the Bisse du Levron, which winds from La Chaux down to the waterfall at the Bisse falls and on towards the Marlène ridge.

Splendid itineraries also lead to other mountain huts throughout the region. From the Col de Mille, via the Cabane Brunet, and on to the Cabane de Panossière across the vertiginous Corbassière suspension bridge — suspended above the glacier of the same name. The route continues through the upper Val de Bagnes, skirting the Mauvoisin reservoir and climbing to the Cabane de Chanrion at the valley’s end, where nature reigns and alpine flora grows in extraordinary abundance.

Mountain Biking

Verbier is one of Europe’s premier destinations for downhill and enduro mountain biking. Each summer, riders from across the world converge here to tackle technical singletrack or cruise more leisurely through open alpine pastures.

The bike park stretches from La Chaux to La Tzoumaz, offering a vast playground accessible via the lift network. Flowing and technical trails welcome beginners, families, and seasoned riders alike. The Verbier Bike Park offers remarkable variety: descents for every level, over 20 enduro routes (211 km), full-day itineraries, and 500 km of mountain roads for cross-country riding. A dirt park, a skatepark, and a pump track in Le Châble round out the offer.

The lifts provide easy access to the high points, allowing riders to chain long descents with sweeping views across the Alps and the Mont-Fort massif.

Via Ferratas and Climbing

From the lower station of the Mont-Fort cable car at Les Gentianes, two distinct routes await: one airy and demanding, the other more accessible. Both lead to the Monts de Cion at over 3,000 metres, with exceptional Alpine views at every turn.

The Mauvoisin Dam — built in 1957 and raised in 1991 — is the second highest in Switzerland at 250 metres. At its foot, the Mauvoisin Gorge via ferrata rises through a ravine sculpted over centuries by ice and water. The first section, Saxifrage, is short and accessible; the second, Tichodrome, is more demanding, with several crossings of the gorge on cable bridges.

Equipment — helmet, harness, and lanyards — is available for hire on site: at Les Gentianes (Mont-Fort cable car lower station) and at the Mauvoisin hotel.

Rock climbing in the Val de Bagnes takes place in an outstanding Alpine setting. Slabs, boulders, and natural faces offer a wide range of routes suited to all levels, from accessible beginner lines to more committing ascents in wild, unspoiled surroundings. All sites are listed in the Entremont Escalade guidebook.

Golf, Tennis & Padel

Between Alpine panoramas and clean mountain air, sport here comes with an exceptional backdrop. The Golf Club de Verbier offers an 18-hole high-altitude course — technical, spectacular, and framed by sweeping views of the surrounding peaks.

For tennis and padel, several courts in Verbier and Le Châble allow outdoor play throughout the summer in a calm and luminous setting. A short game course at Les Moulins also provides a relaxed introduction to golf or a place to sharpen your short game.

Golf, tennis, and padel together make for a well-rounded summer sports offering in the Val de Bagnes.

Paragliding

In the Val de Bagnes, paragliding offers a singular sense of freedom. Taking off from the heights above Verbier, flights drift over alpine meadows, forests, and valley villages — with spectacular views across the Mont-Fort massif and the surrounding Alps. Available as tandem flights for first-timers or solo for experienced pilots, it is one of the most memorable ways to experience the mountain from a new perspective.

Gastronomy and Village Life

The Val de Bagnes in summer is a valley that breathes. Restaurant terraces reopen, local markets take over the village square, and the region’s producers — cheesemakers, winemakers, market gardeners — take centre stage. It is the ideal moment to savour a traditional raclette with a Valaisan charcuterie board, discover the wines of the Valais — Fendant, Petite Arvine, or Cornalin — and explore the region’s celebrated spirits: Abricotine AOP, Williamine AOP, and local liqueurs made from génépi, gentian, quince, and more. Then simply let yourself be carried along by the unhurried rhythm of a mountain village in full summer sun.

Music and Cultural Life

Each summer, Verbier comes alive to the sound of classical music with the Verbier Festival — one of the great international music events in Europe. World-class artists perform in a unique Alpine setting, drawing an international audience of dedicated music lovers and curious first-timers alike. Around this flagship event, a broader programme unfolds: exhibitions, free outdoor concerts, and cultural animations that give the resort a rare intensity for a mountain station at this altitude.

Why Rent a Chalet or Apartment Rather Than Stay in a Hotel?

In Verbier, hotels exist — but it is chalets and private apartments that form the true heart of the summer accommodation offering. And for good reason.

Space comes first. A weekly chalet or apartment rental offers a level of freedom no hotel room can match: a fully equipped kitchen for packing a picnic before a long hike, a terrace and garden for dining with the Alps laid out before you, a shared living space where the whole group can unwind together in the evening.

Value follows. Outside the peak winter weeks, holiday rental prices in Verbier are considerably more accessible. The same properties that command premium rates in winter are available in July at far more reasonable terms — with no reduction in quality, and no reduction in the attentive service of a local agency that knows every property in its portfolio.

When to Go: The Best Weeks for a Summer Rental in Verbier

The summer season runs from June through to October. A few useful benchmarks:

June – early July: nature at its most vivid. Alpine wildflowers in full bloom, main trails snow-free, temperatures ideal for hiking (~15–25°C at altitude).

July: the height of the summer season, animated by the Verbier Festival. Plan ahead — the best holiday rentals in Verbier book up quickly.

August: the natural choice for families. Settled weather, a lively village atmosphere, and school holidays aligning across much of Europe.

September – October: crowds thin, autumn colours begin to appear. For many nature lovers, this is the finest time of all.
