When the larches turn to gold and the high pastures fall quiet once more, the mountains take on an entirely different character. Autumn hiking in Verbier offers the Alps at their most understated: the air is crisp, the low-angled light carves every ridge into relief, and trails freed from the summer crowds can be enjoyed in near solitude. The key is knowing which paths to choose before the first snowfall closes off the high ground. Here is our selection, along with a few tips to make the most of it.
Verbier in Autumn: A Season Apart
Once the herds have come down from the alpine pastures, the Val de Bagnes settles into an interlude that regulars look forward to every year. Larch forests blaze with amber and ochre, bilberry bushes flush crimson across the slopes, and the Combin massif, often dusted with fresh snow by October, stands out sharply against a remarkably clear sky. Mornings are cool and sometimes touched with frost, yet the autumn sun still warms the south-facing slopes generously.
It is also a season of stillness. Quieter paths, viewpoints savoured at leisure, villages returning to their own unhurried rhythm. For anyone who loves the mountains in their most authentic form, autumn hiking in Verbier is a well-earned reward at the close of the season.
How Autumn Differs from Summer Hiking
A Reduced Lift Service
Most of the summer lift network shuts down at the end of the season. In autumn, the Verbier-Les Ruinettes gondola remains the main gateway to the upper slopes, running daily until 25 October. The La Chaux-Express, the Mont-Fort cable car and the Savoleyres gondola, however, are closed, so routes that rely on them become longer or must be completed entirely on foot.
Mountain Huts Closing for the Season
The Cabane du Mont-Fort closed its doors at the end of September, and other high-altitude restaurants scale back their hours between seasons. It is wise to pack a picnic and plenty to drink rather than count on a lunch stop along the way.
More Changeable Weather
At altitude, the first snow can arrive at any point in October, blanketing trails above 2,300 or 2,400 metres. Days shorten noticeably, all the more so once the clocks go back on 25 October, and the cold returns quickly as soon as the sun slips behind the ridgelines.

Our Favourite Trails for Autumn Hiking in Verbier
The Bisse du Levron: A Timeless Classic
For a first taste of autumn hiking in Verbier, nothing beats this local favourite. Setting out from Les Ruinettes at around 2,200 metres, the path follows the historic Bisse du Levron, a centuries-old irrigation channel, through open pastures to the dramatic Chute du Bisse waterfall. Easy and almost level, the route suits families perfectly and forms a loop, returning via a trail lined with wooden sculptures. The bisse flows until the end of October, making it one of the liveliest walks of the late season.
Easy, just over 3 hours as a loop. Highlight: sweeping views down over Verbier and the Val de Bagnes.
The 3-D Parc and the La Chaux Pastures
For a shorter outing, follow the wide alpine track from Les Ruinettes to the La Chaux pastures. Along the way, the open-air works of the Verbier 3-D Parc punctuate a magnificent panorama of the Combins. With the La Chaux-Express closed, the round trip is made on foot, with no particular difficulty.
Easy, around 1 hour 30 return. Highlight: contemporary art set against the high Alps.
Lac des Vaux: For Seasoned Walkers
From Les Ruinettes, the route climbs via the Col du Creblet to Lac des Vaux, nestled above 2,500 metres. Its turquoise waters, ringed with rock and sometimes edged with the season’s first patches of snow, are well worth the effort. This is a white-red-white waymarked mountain trail, best kept for settled weather and confident hikers.
Intermediate, 3 to 4 hours. Highlight: a high-altitude lake in absolute tranquillity.
Croix de Cœur from the Village
With the Savoleyres gondola closed, the Croix de Cœur (2,173 m) is reached on foot from the centre of Verbier, via Le Mayentzet and Plan du Loup. The climb is steady, with over 700 metres of ascent, but the reward is twofold: the Rhône Valley on one side, the peaks of the Val de Bagnes on the other. The more energetic can push on to the Pierre Avoi, one of the region’s most celebrated viewpoints.
Intermediate to demanding, 2 hours 30 to 3 hours of ascent. Highlight: a double panorama.
The Ruinettes-Clambin-Verbier Descent
Fancy a gentler finish? Ride the gondola up to Les Ruinettes, then walk back down to Médran through the hamlets of Les Shlerondes and Clambin. This woodland descent is ideal for soaking up the autumn colours without overexertion.
Easy, around 1 hour 30. Highlight: the larches up close.

Practical Tips for Late-Season Hiking
What to Bring
- Hiking boots with a good tread, essential on frosty or damp sections
- The three-layer system: a breathable base layer, a fleece, and a waterproof, windproof shell
- A hat, gloves and sunglasses, even on cloudless days
- Poles for the descents and a head torch tucked into your pack
- A picnic and a hot drink in an insulated flask
Timing
Set off early, but not too early: give the sun time to thaw the shaded stretches. Plan to be back down well before dusk, and keep an eye on the last gondola if you are relying on it for the return.
Safety
- Check the MeteoSwiss forecast the evening before and again in the morning
- Avoid high-altitude routes after snowfall: a snow-covered trail is an entirely different proposition
- Let someone know your route and carry a fully charged phone
- Stay on marked paths, as autumn is also hunting season in Valais
Extend the Season with a Stay in Verbier in Autumn
There are still a few weeks left to enjoy these trails before the snow reclaims the mountains. Rather than a single day out, why not treat yourself to a few days up here? A stay before the end of October lets you wait for the perfect weather window, vary your hikes as the mood takes you, and return each evening to a warm retreat with a raclette in prospect. Waking up to the snow-dusted Combins, watching the autumn light drift across the valley from your balcony: this is the quiet charm of Verbier before the buzz of winter.
